Shing Ya had pretty great sushi. This is my go to sushi place in Grand Forks although I have yet to try Kon Ichi Wa's. Their service has always been excellent and the food is good, too! I would definitely recommend it to a friend and return again. Favorites include Shing Ya roll and sweet potato roll.

Great food. You get a lot of food for the price of the dish. However, you'd think that a place you would really only go to on a special occasion they would have a nicer atmosphere. The place looks like nothing special when you walk in. The service was great however, the staff is very on their toes. If you're looking for a place to eat and be out in under an hour and a half, this isn't the place for you. You can tell they take their time with the food preparation. Definitely recommend for a date when you do not have plans soon after you drive.

I've been here twice and each time the food has been good and the service was up to par. Wasn't very busy when I've gone in but it was good and I'll be back

We have three people ate there last night. It was around 8pm, we walked in. Wait at entry for few minutes, because there was only one server. She is working hard to run back and forth between dining and kitchen. Shing Ya is a much smaller restaurant when it compare to Fuji. Food tastes okay, unlike most comments posted here. We wait so long to get our food, almost an hour, pretty disappointed. I doubt maybe that's because we went there late. One Server, one Sushi Chef, that's all I can see in dining area.

I don't get why everyone is raving about this place! My friends and I sat at the sushi counter, which was weirdly and uncomfortably hot. Then we realized it was because the coolers were blowing exhaust directly at us. There was no interaction at all with the sushi chef, which is usually the fun part of sitting at the counter. Our waitress couldn't answer any questions about the menu and had to get another waitress to help us. The food tasted okay, but the rolls were loosely wrapped and disintegrated into the wasabi/soy sauce- my biggest sushi pet peeve! There was also a serious lack of drink choices. This place was just okay- NOT the best sushi in town by a long shot! I'd go to Bangkok over this place any day!

Best Thai food in town! I love everything on the menu, and all my sushi loving pals rave about their selection!

Hubby says it's the best sushi he's had since California. I can't say cuz I'm allergic to shellfish, but the stuff if can have is exceptional.

After only 3 weeks in North Dakota, I was pretty skeptical when a friend of mine asked if I wanted to get sushi. Let's be real.... when you think of seafood dishes in the midwest, the words "expensive" or "packaged" usually come to mind. But, Shing Ya was pretty ok! Sure, the salmon roll I ordered served at room temperature. Sure, I was kindof confused when the waitress asked me if I wanted cheese to go with my fried fish. Sure, the prices for the specialty rolls are kindof ridiculous because geez, why would I pay $13 for a sushi roll in North Dakota?! But hey, I guess i'll take what I can get. I recommend the baby lobster roll and chicken cutlet bowl. Stay away from the grilled chicken, it tastes a bit undercooked and bland.

Me and my friend both have diarrhea after dinner there(Amazing roll, spider roll and dacotah roll). Highly not recommend it.

I wanted to give this place 5-stars, because it truly deserves it, but I can't; here's why: The entire meal took nearly two hours from start to finish! I understand that presentation plays a huge role in Japanese cuisine, but there's a point when it affects the entire experience in a negative way. I would have totally understood if the place was packed with a line out the door, but as it was, the place was only half full when I got there, and half of those people left within twenty minutes of my arrival. Duration of the meal aside, this place has some of the best, if not the best, Japanese food I've ever had! I started my meal off with their Heart Attack appetizer, and then I had their Sky Rainbow Roll for my main course. For dessert, I had the Machi Green Tea Ice Cream and some Asian Pear Sake. It was all amazing! The only problem with the sake was that it was served too hot, like scalding-hot-coffee hot; it was much better after I let it cool for ten minutes. Overall, I really liked Shing Ya, and I would highly recommend it, but only if you have the time.

Best sushi and Japanese in Grand Forks. Hands down. Fresh ingredients, lots of ramen options, and a great staff. I love both regular and special rolls. Their yakisoba is excellent also. One thing you must try are the heart attack appetizers. Japanese sushi house twist on jalapeno poppers. Definitely my new favorite Grand Forks restaurant.

Ok, this was my first time here. I had a spicey tuna and an Amazing Roll. They where pretty empty, so naturally I got great service and I enjoyed the sushi quite a bit.

Found their cutlet curry a bit saltier, but sushi was pretty good compared to other places in Grand Forks. Reasonably priced.

This place is by far the best sushi/ sashimi/ ramen/ short ribs.... place you will get in Grand Forks. I ordered some simple salmon rolls, short ribs, and ramen and it was very good. I'm very picky on my sushi basically because i've spent the past 3 years in Korea. I'll be coming back to this place for sure.

I had lunch here and ordered the combo of one special roll (Dacotah) and one regular roll (Baby Lobster). There are a few local restaurants that serve sushi and I've tried all the others except one. This one ranks in the top two for me after today. As far as price for the amount of food--well you get a LOT of food for what you pay. We sat at the sushi bar, which was elevated enough for us to watch everything they did to our rolls. If you've never watched, I would recommend it here because you can see what's going on. The sushi chefs make everything look so easy and the are effecient without being too showy. I like that they care more about the quality of the food they're preparing than the show they put on. All the workers seemed very friendly. Food came quickly. It took us far longer to consume our food than it did for our food to be prepared. Before I give this five stars, I need to try more of the sushi. But between two of us, we ordered two special rolls and two regular rolls. All four were delicious and filling. The plate presentation was better than any other sushi place in town. The hours of operation are limited, so check before you go. Hopefully, if business grows, their hours will, too.

I remember going to Shing Ya when they first opened and didn't think the sushi was that great so I hadn't returned. I thought since it had been a few months since they opened I would give them another shot. Our hostess seated us and took our drink order. The diet coke had a really weird (asprin like) after taste to it. The same person that seated us ended up being our waitress and even though we were ready to order she thought she would help two other girls put some tables together for another table before bothering to get back to us. She then took our order. I ordered a sushi roll and some miso soup. My fiance and I lost track of time for a while because we were deep in conversation but I would guess we talked for at least 15-20 minutes when I realized our soup hadn't arrived yet. I began to get a little irritated, thinking that it was going to come out at the same time as my sushi. Another half an hour passed before we got our soup.... but no sushi. The waitress didn't even apologize for the delay or act like it was strange that we hadn't gotten our soup for 45 minutes. Another half hour went by and I finally had to flag her down because I noticed that the sushi chef was wrapping thing and not making anything at all. She proceeded to make excuses until she realized that our food, in fact, was not being made. They both hunted around for the ticket, thinking it must have gotten lost or something. Then she went back to the computer and printed it. She told us that it hadn't printed out the first time and that's why our sushi hadn't gotten made. I think that she must have forgotten to ring in our order all together and didn't want to take responsibility for it. The way she handled the screw up and the fact that she had ignored us and not thought to inquire about why our food was taking so long until I asked her to made me beyond furious, so my fiance and I left and went to Konechiwa instead where we enjoyed diet coke that didn't have a funny aftertaste and delicious sushi.

This place quickly won me over, and is my new favorite in town. As a fan of the Thai food and sushi at Little Bangkok and Fuji, I decided to give this Japanese place a try, it was a great decision; In fact, I liked Shing Ya better because it is more authentic, and not to mention cheaper, than Little Bangkok and Fuji. The place was very quiet on this Thursday evening, except for a few people who appeared Japanese--that's a good sign! I had the miso soup to start with, that had an excellent taste. I then had the veggie fried udon noodle. Which was good. I also had the sweet potato roll, which was AMAZING. My friend had the vegetable curry which was also very tasty, even though I don't normally like curry. Service was great too, very prompt and friendly service. I'll definitely be coming back for both the sushi and Japanese.

Great service, fantastic sushi. I went on a Saturday for lunch after a stop at the Farmer's Market, it was mildly busy and the service was friendly and efficient. The "basic" rolls are bigger than the specialty rolls at most places. I had salmon and tuna rolls and they were both excellent. I'm ashamed it took me so long to visit but I'll certainly be back.

The best sushi in the Grand Forks area. Better than Fuji, Little Bangkok and Konechi Wa. Most importantly, consistent.
